Our friendy friend & Top 10 NYC Hashable-ite Charlie O’Donnell had some awesome/relevant thoughts on follow-up etiquette on his blog yesterday. You can read the original post here, and re-posted below w permission – and thanks for the mention Charlie!).

I take a lot of meetings to just try to be helpful, especially with people’s careers. Other times, I’ll take a very early meeting with an entrepreneur throwing around a few ideas or someone who comes to me when things just aren’t working. I feel like I give pretty decent advice–and that’s just purely based on the excitement of the person when they walk out of the meeting.
Yet, I probably never hear back from 85% of these people. I have no idea whether or not they ever put any of these ideas into practice, whether they worked, or whether they failed miserably–which would be good data for me.
I noticed this yesterday when two entrepreneurs that I really like came in for the second time, about 3-4 weeks after our first meeting. We had a good chat the first time, I made some intros and suggestions for them. They followed up on all the intros and let me know that they did–which was great b/c I hate when intros disappear into the void (Hashable solves this when people click on the follow up note). They also told me that some of the suggestions that I gave them didn’t work at all–good to know. It was a very productive meeting that helped me work on next steps with them.
When someone doesn’t follow up at all on advice–even to tell me that the advice turned out to be terrible and not work at all–it really makes me regret even spending any time at all with the person. I assume they walked out the door, never took any of it, and just went on their merry way. That would be a real waste of everyone’s time.
Here’s a suggested way to follow up:
1) If you requested the meeting with me, it’s your job to provide the thank you e-mail–and that should include a summary. ”Hey Charlie, thanks for meeting. Your suggestions to do x, y, and z were really appreciated and I’ll definitely keep you posted on how stuff goes. I may not be able to get to them until December, but when I start, I’ll let you know.”
2) If you execute or run into trouble with specific suggestions, follow up questions are always welcome. Same goes when you accomplish a specific task that was a suggestion–a post mortem on its success or failure would be great.
That’s all I’m asking for–just let me know if any of the time we spent together turned out to be useful, not just because we had a good chat, but that it was actually impactful in some way.

We’ve tightened up the Hashcred system a bit with some new rules – here’s an overview:
1. We’ve revised how much Hashcred you earn per activity, as follows:
- Making an email intro: 4
- Making a Twitter intro: 4
- Having your friends report back that they successfully connected: 3 (*only possible with email intros)
- Using #JustMet with someone: 2
- Making any other kind of connection with someone (#lunch, etc.): 2
- Inviting someone into Hashable (#invite): 1
- Receiving an email or Twitter intro: 2
- Receiving any other kind of connection: 1
2. We’ve put some safeguards in place to limit points earned from the following activities:
- Duplicate intros (i.e. introducing same people more than once)
- Intros to bad/bounced email addresses
- Introducing yourself to other people
- Doing an unusual/abnormal number of interactions per hour or per day
3. And we’re actively monitoring for ‘odd’ activity and will likely de-point the following situations (after reaching out to you to discuss ;):
- “joke’ intros like Oprah meet Judge Judy. Sorry, no Hashcred for those :)
- spammy intros – rapid, high volume, or people you don’t know
Our intentions here are not to be punitive – but just to keep things cool and organic! We’re really trying to recognize people who are active and adding value to their communities. So these rules are just to be a little clearer and fairer and to help everyone rock more.
We’ve got some of these rules posted permanently on the site – which you can read here.
AND we’ve got a lot of cool new stuff coming with Hashcred soon (bonuses, easter eggs….) – so stay tuned.
Please give us a holler with questions or feedback at support_at_hashable.com.
Thanks!

Hi Everyone!
We added some spice to Hashable last night.
Here’s the deal:
1. Monthly and “Your Network” Leaderboards – While we still recognize the ‘top connectors of all-time,’ and you will continue to accumulate Hashcred month-over-month – we now default your leaderboard to a ‘Monthly’ view that shows the top Hashcred earners per location per month. This is to give newcomers a shot at greatness, and to make sure you old-timers don’t rest on the laurels of your past intros!
2. New Hashcred Rules – We’ve tightened things up a bit. Most notably, we’ve lowered the number of Hashcred you first get for making intros, but added a lot more Hashcred on the back-end when we learn that your friends actually connected. Also, we’ve added some safeguards into the system. For example, we now cap the number of Hashcred you can earn in an hour or with any given person in a day. We’ve got a second blog post coming that explains these new rules in greater detail.
3. Canada & Australia in the House - We’d like to extend a hearty #welcome to our friends in Canada and Australia, who will now be represented with their own leaderboards! If you’d like to champion a regional or industry leaderboard, please give us a holler at support@hashable.com.
4. New ‘How it Works’ Section – We’ve overhauled our explanation of Hashable and all things Hashcred. We hope this helps!
Oh – and one last thing – we’ve taken all of the Hashable employees off the leaderboards – so it’s officially open season.
Happy connecting everyone – and game on!
Team Hashable
PS – Many of these changes were based on your feedback – thank you, and please keep it coming!

Good news everyone – Hashable is starting to grow up!
You’ll see LOTS of new stuff coming out over the next several weeks – ranging from our mobile app (iPhone’s up first) – to a site redesign and scads of new features.
For starters – today we released a new version of our posting tool that lets you post all kinds of connections to Hashable.
We are officially not just for intros anymore!
Coffees, lunches, beers, meetings, yoga, power walks, movies, hanging out with someone – just tell us what you’re doing and throw a # in front of it – and then tell us who you’re doing it with. (i.e., #lunch with @HashableAmy)
Whatever meaningful connections you make with people – you can now get them ‘on the grid’ with Hashable – and show your real network over time based on who you interact with the most.
And for those of you who want to track all your relationships but don’t want to share what you’re doing – you can post all these connections privately. Hello social CRM!
We are really excited about the weeks ahead and hope you enjoy the new stuff as it comes. Please keep the awesome feedback coming – and happy connecting!
